Essays play a critical role in setting students apart from their fellow applicants. A well-written essay can be the deciding factor between acceptance and rejection. This is especially true when admissions committees are comparing students with similar grades and test scores. Working with a professional college prep coach can make sure your student’s essay is a true reflection of their abilities, ambitions, and personality.
I know what makes an essay memorable. I read hundreds of essays each year as I am on a scholarship committee. The support I offer is designed to help students tell their stories authentically so their applications shine.

How I help students write essays that get noticed
My approach combines insider knowledge, personalized support, and a proven structure that takes the stress out of writing. The personality test that students take with me tends to help students write their essays in a more dynamic way, as they can better understand themselves.

Brainstorming topics
I will have a brainstorming session with your child to discuss their story, interests, background, and goals before a single word is written. I help students discover topics that highlight their values and growth while avoiding overused or risky topics that may weaken an application.

Strategic planning
I help students map out all the essays required for the schools on their college lists. Many students do not realize that they may need to write supplemental essays for individual colleges in addition to the standard personal statement for the Common App. A school may require a diversity statement or an essay detailing why a student wants to go there. Some selective schools or programs may have an additional three to five smaller essays. An organized plan and timeline ensure that every essay is completed without last minute stress.

Developing a first draft
I guide students through every step of development after topics have been chosen. I offer feedback on structure, content, tone, and clarity, helping them express themselves powerfully. I have read hundreds of essays as a board and scholarship committee member, so I know exactly what grabs attention and what falls flat.

Multiple rounds of edits
Excellent writing takes rewriting, reworking, and having a second pair of eyes look it over. I work with students through multiple revisions to ensure the essays are fully polished before sending them off with the application. I help students craft clear, compelling essays by offering targeted feedback on content and transitions, suggesting cuts or additions that strengthen their message—while ensuring their unique voice stays front and center.

Staying on track
It is easy to fall behind on essays or to put them off, thinking they can be finished at a later time. But students who do this may find themselves scrambling to finish multiple essays as deadlines near. When essays are written at the last minute, there’s no time to polish them—and that can make it harder for their story to stand out. I help students stay on schedule with a personalized admissions timeline. You will know what is due and when, so there are no surprise essays to write at the last minute.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the college essay important?
The college essay is an applicant’s chance to show admissions officers who they are beyond their test scores and GPA. This is the part of your child’s application where their personality, values, and what makes them unique can truly shine. A great essay can be the factor in a college’s decision to extend an offer of admission or even special invitations to their Honors College or a special scholarship.
How long does a college essay have to be?
The Common Application personal statement must be between 250 and 650 words. I recommend aiming for the higher end of that range to fully take advantage of the space. Supplemental essays required by individual schools can range in word count requirements from 50 characters to 650 words. The average length of supplemental essays are 200 words.
What should the college essay be about?
College essays that stand out are the ones that are personal, reflective, and meaningful. They do not have to be about a dramatic or life-altering event. In fact, an essay about everyday experiences can be powerful! The main goal is to show who you are and what matters to you, not just what you have done.
Some ideas of topics to write about include:
- A moment of personal growth or a challenge you overcame
- How a certain value guides your decision-making
- A passion or interest that has been instrumental in shaping you
- An experience that changed your perspective
There are some topics that are best avoided for college admission essays. For example, writing about anything too negative or unresolved, or on a topic that focuses on someone else’s story rather than your own.
When to write a college essay?
It is ideal for students to begin brainstorming and writing their personal statement during the end of their junior year or the summer before senior year. This allows for plenty of time for reflection, drafting, and making edits without the pressure of looming deadlines.
Supplemental essays can be started once your child has finalized their college list. Applications and essay prompts are typically released in August for most schools. I help students stay motivated and on track to not only finish their essays but also to write them effectively.
Is essay writing available in a package?
Yes! I offer essay coaching as a part of several packages as well as a standalone service. I support your student through the entire writing process from brainstorming topics to personalized feedback on each draft.
