Why aptitude testing matters

Many parents think, “My child will figure it out in college.” But college is a serious investment, and switching majors multiple times or graduating with an unusable degree can be both costly and discouraging. This is where aptitude testing changes the game. By the age of fourteen or fifteen, your child’s natural aptitudes have already solidified. Aptitudes are how a person is wired to solve problems, communicate, process information, and complete tasks. They are consistent and measurable. Interests are different, as these can change as students grow. The Highlands aptitude test is a gold-standard assessment that provides extremely valuable information. Students complete the test online from the comfort of their home. The test takes a total of two and a half hours and can be done all at once or spread out over a few days. This is not a test your child needs to prepare for, and there are no right or wrong answers.

The results from the test provide detailed insights, where students learn what types of tasks come naturally to them and what challenges they may face. It can help to pinpoint a career path and gauge areas that may require extra work. Some students begin with no idea of what they want to do, only to discover that their results align with natural inclinations they did not know they had. Others already have an idea in mind and leave feeling validated and confident that they are on the right track.

Personalized career coaching with real-world connection

Aptitude testing is just the beginning. Afterwards, your child will move into personalized coaching with me. The first step is a call with me to go over logistics and prepare for the test. I schedule two coaching sessions to help interpret the test results and facilitate reflection once the test is completed. I will use these sessions to discuss potential career paths, explore majors, and draw out the goals your child has. Students are encouraged to research fields they are curious about, and I not only teach them exactly how to do it, but I give them an easy-to-follow process and engaging worksheets to learn about different career paths. Then I match them with a professional working in that field and set up an informational interview. This valuable conversation allows students to ask questions, gain perspective, and imagine themselves in that professional role. Students who are given this opportunity develop the confidence to engage with adults in a professional setting.

What are the benefits of aptitude testing?

Aptitude testing offers objective insight into your child’s natural abilities. Understanding what your child is hardwired to do well can guide decisions about school majors, careers, and even how they learn and communicate best. It helps to eliminate the guesswork and builds confidence by showing students where they are most likely to thrive. They are better equipped to make meaningful and informed academic and career decisions with this foundation.

The Highlands aptitude test gives your child an advantage because it reveals information about their strengths and challenges before they have had a chance to fully discover them in school or at home. This knowledge pairs perfectly with career and college planning. It lowers stress, makes college prep more exciting, and helps to prevent costly trial-and-error later on.

Can aptitude testing help my child figure out their major or college?

Yes and yes! Students may feel overwhelmed by the pressure to choose the “right” path after high school. They may make decisions based on temporary interests, what their friends are doing, or what they think others want them to do. This type of decision making without guidance can prove costly and dissatisfying, because following someone else’s dream is not sustainable. The aptitude testing I guide students through provides a scientific and objective look into your child’s abilities. These aptitudes solidify around the age of fourteen and are the building blocks of how they think, learn, problem-solve, and perform.

Your child will be in a better position to select a major that fits into what they are good at when they understand their natural aptitudes. The test results can also help in identifying a college that offers programs in their areas of strength. The clarity gained helps your child choose a major and college based on their long-term goals rather than fleeting interests or the limited options they’ve been exposed to.

My child is not a good test taker. Is aptitude testing right for them?

It is! The Highlands Aptitude Battery test is completely different from standardized testing. It does not rely on any set of knowledge, and there are no trick questions. It is not a test that your student could fail. Instead, it uses interactive brain games to measure how your child thinks and solves problems. Many students I work with who do not usually test well in school actually enjoy the aptitude test. It is all about learning and growing rather than passing or failing. In fact, your child may gain confidence from seeing their true strengths reflected in the test results.
